Desires This World Cannot Afford

A Christian’s ultimate hope should not be in something that this world can provide. God, by His Spirit, graciously works in the heart of the Christian to stir desires that will only ultimately be satisfied in heaven worshipping God forever. The puritan Richard Sibbes put it well when he wrote:

“We have nothing to do with Christ, unless we have his Spirit, to stir up motions and desires of better things than this world can afford.” (Richard Sibbes, The Complete Works of Richard Sibbes, Vol. 7, (J. Nichol, 1864), 546)
