Job Describes the Portion of the Wicked

271 And Job continued his discourse: 2 "As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made my life bitter, 3 as long as I have life within me, the breath of God in my nostrils, 4 my lips will not say anything wicked, and my tongue will not utter lies. 5 I will never admit you are in the right; till I die, I will not deny my integrity. 6 I will maintain my innocence and never let go of it; my conscience will not reproach me as long as I live.

The Message

Job Describes the Portion of the Wicked

271 Having waited for Zophar, Job now resumed his defense: 2 "God-Alive! He's denied me justice! God Almighty! He's ruined my life! 3 But for as long as I draw breath, and for as long as God breathes life into me, 4 I refuse to say one word that isn't true. I refuse to confess to any charge that's false. 5 There is no way I'll ever agree to your accusations. I'll not deny my integrity even if it costs me my life. 6 I'm holding fast to my integrity and not loosening my grip - and, believe me, I'll never regret it.

New Living Translation

271 Job continued speaking: 2 "I vow by the living God, who has taken away my rights, by the Almighty who has embittered my soul- 3 As long as I live, while I have breath from God, 4 my lips will speak no evil, and my tongue will speak no lies. 5 I will never concede that you are right; I will defend my integrity until I die. 6 I will maintain my innocence without wavering. My conscience is clear for as long as I live.

Matthew Henry's Commentary on Job 27:1-6

Commentary on Job 27:1-6

(Read Job 27:1-6)

Job's friends now suffered him to speak, and he proceeded in a grave and useful manner. Job had confidence in the goodness both of his cause and of his God; and cheerfully committed his cause to him. But Job had not due reverence when he spake of God as taking away his judgment, and vexing his soul. To resolve that our hearts shall not reproach us, while we hold fast our integrity, baffles the designs of the evil spirit.
