John Bunyan has been called the most influential of the Puritans but whilst it is true to say that his books have sold more than any other writer of his era, at the time he wrote them he was a largely unknown itinerant preacher/tinker. Pilgrim's Progress was only published after John Owen gave his recommendation to the printer! Bunyan has a brilliant ability to tell a story with deep theological roots in which you recognise yourself. His allegories convey Christian truth to those without a theological background in a way, perhaps, only matched by C.S. Lewis in a later era.
