Description of Martin Chemnitz, author of Examination of the Council of Trent:
Meeting at intervals between 1545 and 1563, the Council of Trent, reacting to the Reformation, reaffirmed Roman Catholic doctrine in its entirety. To disseminate and defend the council's decrees, the Jesuit scholar Andrada wrote an authoritative explanation of its proceedings. Chemnitz examines the council in the light of Andrada's work--an examination that has become the standard Lutheran answer to the claims of Rome as set forth at Trent. Concordia Publishing House, 4 volumes. Hardcover. Volume II deals with the sacraments, taking up each of the Roman Catholic sacraments in turn with particular attention to the Eucharist. In each case Chemnitz quotes the pertinent sections of the council's decrees and then examines them on the basis of Scripture and the church fathers.
