About Ralph G. Turnbull:

Jonathan Edwards was born in 1703 in Connecticut. At the age of thirteen he entered Yale, after receiving his early education from his father, who was a Congregational minister. In 1729 he assumed full ministerial duties for his grandfather, Solomon Stoddard, at Northampton, Massachusetts. Under the influence of Edwards’s preaching, Northampton and neighboring parishes experienced a powerful spiritual revival, known as the Great Awakening. During this time he made the acquaintance of George Whitefield, who was instrumental in promoting Edwards abroad. In 1750 he was dismissed from his charge at Northampton and the following year resettled in Stockbridge, where he pastored a small American Indian congregation. It was here that he did most of his writing. Edwards accepted the presidency of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), but died from a smallpox vaccination only a week after taking the office.
