Demand and Grace: The Sermon on the Mount

More on Demand and Grace:

With a scholar's acumen and a pastor's compassion, Edwin Broadhead leads his reader through Matthew's Sermon on the Mount. Broadhead's careful textual study leads to an interpretation of Jesus and his teachings within their historical and Biblical contexts. His pastoral gift is to relate Jesus' teachings on law and grace in the Sermon on the Mount to the private and public holiness of our everyday word and living. This is a study equally helpful to students of the Bible and to lay Christians who week guidance in their living. - Larry D. Shinn, President, Berea College The Sermon on the Mount is often viewed as unattainable. Broadhead helps us experience the demands of Jesus, through the empowering joy of grace. This fresh approach to the sermon captured my heart. Often readers of these difficult words of Jesus ask, How can I live like that?' After reading Demand and Grace I said, I WANT to live like that! - Elaine Maust, Co-pastor, Jubilee Mennonite Church Opening new doors into timeless teaching Demand and Grace will enable another generation to experience the radical message of the Sermon on the Mount. Edwin Broadhead has given us a most readable book of scholarship, challenge and study. The study guides lead you quickly to the heartbeat of Christian discipleship. - Harold Pidwell, Dean, Melbourne College of Divinity, Australia

Description of Demand and Grace:

Jesus' teachings in the Sermon on the Mount are foundational to all that it means to be Christian. Here the Sermon is read in the context of its setting in the world of Matthew's Gospel. Four concepts guide this study: 1. The key dynamic of the Sermon is found in its unique understanding of God. 2. The program for implementation of God's will is the Kingdom. 3. The radical demands of the Kingdom are rooted in the extraordinary gift of God's grace. 4. The demands of the Sermon remain relevant only as they are reinterpreted and actualized within contemporary life. Following this analysis, the continuing impact of the Sermon is traced through the experience of significant groups and individuals, such as the Anabaptists, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Clarence Jordan. Central to both lines of study is the overarching question of what the Sermon means for us and how its values may be realized in our world.
