The New Oxford History of Music has been planned as a complete survey of music from the earliest times down to the present day, including not only the achievements of the Western world but also the contributions made by Eastern civilizations and primitive societies. The whole work will be completed in ten volumes. The present volume is designed as a survey of all music outside the Christian European filed. It opens with an extended survey of the music of primitive peoples by Marius Schneider. Then there are chapters by Laurence Picken on the music of China and the other countries of Far-Eastern Asia, and by Arnold Bake on the music of India. Henry G. Farmer discusses the music of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, Carl H. Kraeling and Lucetta Mowry jesish music in biblical times, and Eric Werner the music of post-biblical Judaism. Isobel Henderson and J. E. Scott contribute chapters on the music of ancient Greece and Rome respectively, and finally there is a chapter by Henty G. Farmer on the music of Islam.
